Fix My Council Tax

Council tax band check for England, Wales and Scotland

Is your home in the wrong council tax band?

Bands are still based on what homes were worth in 1991 (2003 in Wales), and some were set wrong. Fix My Council Tax checks yours against similar homes nearby, tells you straight whether it's worth challenging, and writes the evidence for you.

How it works

No paperwork to dig out. Fix My Council Tax fills in your bill from your council's rates and works out what your home was worth on the valuation date from what you paid.

  1. Step 1

    Tell us about your home

Your band, your council, and roughly what you paid and when. That's it.

  2. Step 2

    Paste in your neighbours

Search your postcode on the free official band search, copy the page and paste it in. Fix My Council Tax reads every address and band for you.

  3. Step 3

    Get a straight answer

A clear verdict, what you could save, and if you have a case, your evidence written and ready to submit for free.

We'll tell you if you shouldn't challenge

A band review looks at your home afresh, and in rare cases a band goes up. Most homes are in the right band, so we won't tell you to challenge unless the evidence is there.

Knowing your band is right is worth having too. It's one less thing to wonder about, and it stops you making a challenge that could cost you.

Strong case Similar homes nearby are in a lower band. Your evidence is ready to submit.
Closer look What you paid points to a lower band. We show you what to check next.
Looks right Your band matches similar homes. No need to do anything.
Don't challenge The evidence suggests your band could go up. Leave it alone.

One flat price. Never a share of your refund.

Questions

Is Fix My Council Tax part of the government?

No. Fix My Council Tax is independent and isn't connected to the Valuation Office, HMRC, the Scottish Assessors or your council. Challenging your band is free on GOV.UK, and you submit it yourself.

What if my band turns out to be right?

Then you'll know for sure, and you'll avoid a challenge that could put your band up. Most homes are in the right band, so this is the most common answer.

Can my band go up if I challenge it?

It can, though it's rare. That's why Fix My Council Tax warns you when the evidence points the wrong way and tells you not to challenge.

My house was built after 1991. Does it still work?

Yes. Every home is banded on what it would have sold for in April 1991 (April 2003 in Wales), even new builds. Fix My Council Tax works that out from what you paid.

How much could I get back?

It depends on your council's rates and how long you've lived there. Dropping one band on an average Band D bill in England saves about £266 a year, and refunds can go back years. Fix My Council Tax shows your own figures.

What happens to my details?

Your home's details and your neighbours' bands stay on your own phone and are never sent to us. The only thing that leaves your phone is your email, if you use Restore access, so we can find your payment.
